Most parts of the roof are repairable. However, the roof deck is not. In today’s post, local roofing contractor Hinkle Roofing discusses why this key roofing component can’t be repaired and must be replaced when damaged.
What Is the Roof Deck?
The roof deck, also known as decking or sheathing, is the flat surface where components such as the underlayment and outer roofing material (asphalt shingles and standing seam metal panels, to name a few) are fastened.
Local roofing companies typically use plywood, composite, or OSB (oriented strand board) for decking. The cavities on the attic-facing side can be filled with cellulose or expanding foam insulation. If properly built and maintained, a roof deck can be used for two installations. A third one would not be ideal because of the age of the material and the holes that would be left by old fasteners.
Causes of Roof Deck Damage
Roof decks are not easily damaged, thanks to the protection provided by the underlayment and the outer roofing material. However, moisture infiltration can happen if the roof is punctured by impact caused by tree branches, hailstones or airborne debris. During storms, wind-driven rain can infiltrate the roof edges, as well as breaks in the roofing plane, such as valleys.
Decking can also be damaged from the inside if the attic is poorly ventilated. Moist air in the attic can cause the decking to delaminate, which can result in fasteners coming off the roof. Other signs of moisture-damaged roof decks, as seen from the attic, include water stains, the presence of mold and clumping insulation.
Is Decking Repairable?
Unfortunately, the damaged roof deck has to be replaced, given that it’s part of the roof’s structure. Unlike components made of wood like trim or wood shakes, decking won’t benefit from painting or refinishing. Also, given their size, spot repairs are not an option. Note that some decking materials are more resistant to moisture damage than others, a feature that you should look into when discussing roof replacement options with your trusted roofer.
