Planning for your siding replacement project? A little knowledge about different siding terms would surely make it easier to communicate with your contractor. This will also help you get a better idea of what you can expect from the job. Hinkle Roofing, a top-notch siding and commercial roofing contractor, lists some basic siding terms that you should know.
Backerboard
This is a flat material that will be used on the face of your home. It’s applied between the studs and siding, and it provides an even surface for siding installation.
Batten
This is a strip of wood used for sealing joints in wooden siding. It’s often used in “board and batten” siding in which the battens refer to the smaller parts that go between the boards.
Buttlock
It refers to the bottom portion of a siding panel that locks into a previously installed panel. Its main purpose is to keep the siding from moving around.
Channel
This is an area on a piece of siding where another piece of siding or trim can be inserted.
Course
It refers to one row of siding that runs the length of an exterior wall.
Drip Cap
Also called “head flashing,” it is a piece of trim that keeps water away from the top of the vertical siding.
Fascia
Sometimes referred to as “fascia board,” runs horizontally and covers the joint between the top of an exterior wall and the overhanging lower edge of a roof.
Flashing
You probably hear this term from roofing companies as well. But with regards to siding, flashing is a piece of metal that’s placed above doors and windows in order to keep water from entering your home.
Gable
The gable is often the triangular part of a wall where the roof pitch intersects.
Lap
Also called “overlap”, it conceals the nails that fasten the siding to the exterior of your home.
Miter Joint
This refers to the intersection of two panels at a 90 degree angle.
Starter Strip
This is a piece that secures the first panel or course of siding to a wall.
Strapping
Also called “furring strips”, it’s a piece of wood or metal placed on the exterior wall. It is where the siding attaches.
Weep Holes
These are tiny holes found at the bottom edge of the siding. They prevent water buildup between the backerboard and the siding.
