Metal roofing is one of the most versatile roofing materials available, yet many myths still prevent homeowners from even considering its benefits. As a roofing company that specializes in metal roofing, we debunk some of these myths:
MYTH: Metal Roofs Are Loud
They are not, unless your roof doesn’t have a roof deck. This misconception may have started because of noisy metal sheds, which are directly attached to the trusses. On residential applications, the metal is attached to a proper roof deck, complete with a waterproofing barrier, wood and insulation. If installed properly, metal roofs are much quieter than asphalt shingles.
MYTH: Metal Roofs Prevent Ice Dams
Ice dams are caused by poor attic insulation, not the roofing material. What happens is that heat from the attic melts the snow on the roof, which then flows down and refreezes as it reaches the roof’s edge. While properly-maintained attic insulation fixes this problem, metal roofing does allow ice to easily slough off, reducing the chances of ice dam formation.
MYTH: Metal Roofs Reduce Heating Bills
This is, again, a matter of efficient attic insulation than the choice of roofing material. The combination of insulated attic, exterior walls and energy-efficient windows and entry doors create a thermal envelope, which keeps heat from escaping on cold days and minimizing indoor heating requirements.
Metal roofs can also help reduce cooling bills, by minimizing the heat absorbed through your roof and reducing your air conditioning requirements in warm weather. Light-colored and reflective coatings easily add “cool roofing” properties, which reflect a significant portion of the sun’s heat and emit already-absorbed heat back out.
MYTH: Metal Roofs Attract Lightning
The tallest grounded structure in the area, metal or not, will always be the thing that attracts lightning. This means unless your home is standing alone in the middle of a field and shaped like a tower, there’s little chance your home will be struck by lightning.
